Issue 2
One of the things which Enabling Information did was carry out a consultation process on the need for a new Disability Information Service in Scotland. Consultations were sought from a wide range of organisations, both of and for disabled people and carers, as well as from generalist information providers.
When SAIF was set up it established a Working Group to take this forward and come up with a detailed specification for The Scottish Office so that the work could be put out to tender.
The Information Service will be a national resource for local information providers and will provide advice and information on a huge range of issues affecting disabled people and carers. Its job will be to provide a recognised structure for the dissemination of the masses of information collated by local and national information providers and make sure that it reaches the people who need it.
The tender process is already under way and the final specification will soon be agreed. Adverts inviting people to tender for the work will be appearing in the national press during March/April 1998 when further details will be available. The intention is to award the contract by 31st August 1998.
