Section One : Local Accessible Information within Local Authorities and Health Boards
SAIF commissioned research to investigate the progress of Local Authorities and Health Boards in making their information accessible. The research focused on whether or not organisations had an accessible information strategy in place, the processes involved in developing the strategy, barriers to producing accessible information and some good practice case studies.
Using the findings we have produced a summary report and made some key recommendations to improve accessible information within Local Authorities and Health Boards.
Key recommendations include:
- Putting in place an accessible information strategy
- Identifying someone responsible
- Implementing staff training
- Introducing a set of standards
- Involving service users
- Don’t just ‘add-on’ accessibility
A copy of the report and more information about the key recommendations can be obtained by contacting us or from the SAIF website saifscotland.org.uk.

Section Three : Raising Awareness Workshops for the NHS
One of SAIF’s targets this year is to raise awareness across the NHS in Scotland about accessible information. Our new information brochure aimed at the NHS highlights the importance and benefits of accessible information and services on offer from SAIF (available in hard copy by contacting us or can be downloaded from the SAIF website saifscotland.org.uk).
Also available on our website (training page) is an outline of our Raising Awareness Workshops. The workshops can contribute to equalities training and help to meet staff knowledge and skills frameworks.

Section Four: E-communication training in the north of Scotland
In June SAIF delivered three successful ‘E-communication: accessibility in practice’ courses in Glasgow:
- Creating accessible documents
- Sending accessible emails
- Testing the accessibility of websites
Following positive feedback and requests for the courses from further afield we are hoping to deliver the courses in the north of Scotland before the year is out. As the details are confirmed more information will be posted on the SAIF website training page.
